Shoulder Pain

Poor Posture

Poor posture is today’s new world health problem. It causes more mental and physical health complications than most people realise. The human body was designed to move and not sit in a chair for several hours at a time. Posture is an important part of preventing problems like back, neck, shoulder pain and even depression and fatigue.  When the back is straight, the spine is supported and stabilised. When you slouch or hunched over, your spine no longer has the support it needs to stay balanced. There’s a reason your mother told you to sit up straight – poor posture destroys your health.

Bad posture worsens Depression and Stress

When the body remains in a seated position for an extended period of time, slouched and constricted, all of your internal processes slow down. As a result your energy levels decrease and creates a poor mood. Making you feel irritable, tired and aggravated. Slouching causes your body to compress and constrict. Therefore your heart and lungs are forced to work harder to pump blood and circulate oxygen. This causes stress on your internal organs and muscles. So sitting in an upright position with your shoulders and chest broad makes it easier to breathe.

Causes Digestive problems

Sitting for long periods constricts your heart, lungs and intestines. This can make digestion uncomfortable and cause a lot of issues such as acid reflux and hernias. If you are experiencing digestive distress, you may want to take a closer look at your posture and how much time you are spending sitting each day. Poor posture can cause you to develop that unsightly belly pouch that most of us dread. It affects both heavy and thin people and can be attributed to slouching and poor sitting habits.

Poor Breathing

The lungs function optimally when the diaphragm and rib cage can properly expand.  Bending forward, backward or sideways invites distorted restricted, shallow breathing. Leaning over squeezes your lungs, making them smaller, and decreasing your breathing volume. Shallow breathing means less oxygen into your system. Less oxygen means less energy. This means It restricts blood and oxygen flow which makes it difficult to breath and speak.

To see how posture affects your breathing, sit with your shoulders and spine in a slouched position in your chair. Exhale and then hold your breath. Now, stand up straight and continue to hold your breath.

Back, Shoulder and Neck Pain

Sitting in a slouched position at your desk for an extended period of time puts a great deal of stress on your upper body. Back, shoulder and neck pain are the most common effects of poor posture. The pain areas include:

  • Lower back – 63%
  • Neck – 53%
  • Shoulder – 38%
  • Wrist – 33%

The posture that causes neck and back pain the most is when a person is sitting with their head and shoulders pushed forward. This occurs when you are sitting in front of a computer, with your head jutted forward to read the screen. Since this posture usually takes place in the workplace, it’s important for people to remain aware of how they’re sitting, and to make corrections whenever possible.

Over time, poor posture can cause a misalignment in the spine and lead to even more pain. If the spine is misaligned, weight or stress needs to be redistributed to compensate for your slouching. In addition, it also causes joint stress. Your joints are forced to bear a heavier load, eventually, leading to pain and degradation of the tissues surrounding your joints.

Poor posture can also cause neck pain. Since the neck and skull sit on top of the spine, the curvature of the spine can cause the head’s position to become askew. This causes considerable strain on the neck muscles, which in turn can contribute to neck aches, pains, and even chronic headaches.  There are a number of muscles that make up the neck and when these muscles are strained or become tight, they can cause neck pain.

Tension Headaches

Tension Headaches are another side effect of poor posture. Office workers tend to experience more headaches simply because they are putting so much tension and strain on their bodies by sitting all day. Hunching over computers, sitting in cars for hours on end or sprawling on the sofa are some examples that can all lead to back and neck pain which ultimately leads to a headache. Obesity, muscle tone, shoes and pregnancy can make you more vulnerable to posture-related tension headaches as well.

One common reason for headaches, especially tension headaches is muscle tension and tightness. This tightness occurs all over the head and neck feeling like there is a rubber band around your head sometimes. These muscles work hard to adapt to the constraints that are being put on them when your posture is poor. Therefore the tension in your neck, shoulders and spine eventually work their way up to your head and cause a tension headache.

Try this – drop your shoulders as you are reading this paragraph. Try to push them towards the ground. You will notice that they fall a considerable distance. Some others may experience a small fall or none at all. For those of you that noticed that their shoulders did not drop at all, sit up and try the exercise again. When you are sitting up straight your shoulders should drop very little, if at all, meaning your posture is good.  But If your shoulders did drop alot your posture is poor. This can lead to shortening of some muscles and irritation of your spine and the discs. This shortening will cause that rubber band feeling on the head. Most often this pain is felt right at the base of the skull and if you push on it with your fingers you can sometimes get relief.

Tips on How to Improve Your Posture

  • Invest in an ergonomic chair, keyboard and mouse.  You want to make sure that it’s providing you with the support you need.
  • Get up and stretch every half hour or hour, if possible. This will give your body a break and allow your organs to get the oxygen they need.
  • Exercise. Focus on exercises that strengthen your core.  A strong core will make it much easier for your body to remain in an upright position.
  • Practice yoga. Yoga encourages good posture. Some of the poses require you to keep your shoulders and chest broad. This opens the lungs and allows you to breathe easily.

Chiropractic Care for all age groups

People from all age groups can benefit from Chiropractic care. From Small children, the elderly, pregnant woman to amateur or Olympic athletes.   It is safe for the whole family. Anyone who suffers from specific musculoskeletal problems can benefit from Chiropractic care.  A chiropractor’s goal is to focus on the health of the spine.  They perform adjustments (hands on spinal manipulations) to the spine or other parts of the body with the goal of correcting alignment problems, alleviating pain, improving function and mobility, increasing vitality and supporting the body’s natural ability to heal itself without surgery or medication.

Normally, we tend to think of adults only with bad backs or those who have been injured on the job that need to seek chiropractic care. This is not the case,  all age groups stands to benefit from chiropractic treatment. Chiropractic care is suited to each individual’s age, condition and spinal problem. Generally children have more mobile joints than adults so they require less force in order to attain the desired effect of the adjustment. Where as Senior citizens receive gentle chiropractic adjustments to accommodate their sensitive bones.

There are many reasons why we should seek chiropractic care for all age groups. They are:

Strong Immune System

A healthy central nervous system and a strong immune system go hand in hand. Our nervous system runs through the spine and it works with the immune system in order for the body to adapt to various conditions and heal appropriately when required. Spinal misalignments can cause neural dysfunctions and these are stressful to the body which lead to a weak immune response.

So when the CNS sends and receives messages efficiently, other systems and functions in the body are able to work properly and competently. Chiropractic adjustments have shown to boost the immune system. Therefore by allowing a chiropractor to adjust your spine, especially on a continual basis,  your body systems (nervous, endocrine and immune) naturally get a boost. The immune system is responsible for fighting off illness,  so you’ll be feeling healthier overall.

An Increase in Energy

Many people do not realise how much and how often tension can build up in the body. Simple spinal adjustments can help your body release tension in your muscles and alleviate any pain you may have. As the tension is released, the body is able to relax thus allowing you to sleep better.  Less pain and more sleep allows your energy levels to rise naturally.

Energy flows through your nerves and your nerves distribute the energy throughout your body. When your spine is aligned properly, your nervous system keeps the flow of energy balanced. But when your spine is misaligned, it causes kinks in your nerves interfering with energy flow. The result is that persistent feeling of fatigue that makes it difficult to get through the day. You can sleep all day and all night, but until your spine is returned to proper alignment, that feeling of fatigue will continue to drain you.

Improved Digestion

The digestive system links to the nervous system. The nervous system controls various aspects of your digestive function. For example, the nerves in the thoracic and lumbar regions of your spine control the pace at which your body digests food. If any of the numerous nerves in your spine are not functioning properly, problems with digestion can easily arise.

When the spine is not aligned, stress and strain is placed on the nerves. Thus leaving the nerves incapable of sending out the necessary signals to your digestive system to trigger them to work properly. A chiropractor can safely and gently correct your spine through spinal manipulation. For this reason your body starts to become healthier, especially along the spine and the central nervous system. Digestion is now able to move more freely. The body is then able to process foods and eliminate toxins faster, leaving you feeling better than ever.

Care Plan

Chiropractors will tailor a specific care plan for you that takes into account a number of factors. These can include: results of nerve function scans or x-rays, and any physical examination findings. The type of tissue involved? (eg. ligament, tendon, muscle, disc, organ). How long you have had the condition? The intensity of the pain and the amount of inflammation you are experiencing. The presence of any unavoidable aggravating factors to your condition (eg. your occupation or degeneration). The chiropractor evaluates a patient’s particular spinal problem and develops an individual course of care. Therefore each patient’s care is uniquely different from every other patients with each visit building on the one before.

Remember that everyone from all age groups can benefit from chiropractic care. Our chiropractors at Chiro & Sports Med are committed to providing chiropractic solutions to address your unique needs, whether you are experiencing a pinched nerve, bulging disc, back painneck pain, headaches or even muscular tightness and tension. Sports Injuries and Chiropractic Care

Whether you play sports at an amateur or professional level. As an athlete the demands of running, jumping, throwing or tackling can result in painful tears, sprains, and strains. People of all ages suffer from some form of sports injury in their lives and getting back to playing again is the most important thing. Chiropractors are trained to deal with a wide range of sports injuries from Achilleshamstring, calf, groin, thigh strains to tennis elbowneck back or a shoulder sprain. By getting your injury assessed and treated this will not only get you back on your feet faster, but also screen out any bad habits that can lead to further injury.

Sports Injuries

“Sports injuries” are injuries that happen when playing sports, exercising or involved in any active play. During many sports, body contact, fast stops and starts, and positioning place an unusual amount of strain on the spine and structural system.  The Muscles, Joints and ligaments can be affected from overuse, trauma or repetitive motions. Some are from accidents. Others can result from poor training practices or improper gear. Not warming up or stretching enough before you play or exercise can also lead to injuries. The most common sports injuries are:

  • Sprains and strains
  • Knee injuries
  • Swollen muscles
  • Achilles tendon injuries
  • Pain along the shin bone
  • Fractures
  • Dislocations

Types of Sports Injuries

There are two kinds of sports injuries: acute and chronic. Acute injuries occur suddenly when playing or exercising. Sprained ankles, strained backs, and fractured hands are acute injuries. Signs of an acute injury include:

  • Sudden, severe pain
  • Swelling
  • Not being able to place weight on a leg, knee, ankle, or foot
  • An arm, elbow, wrist, hand, or finger that is very tender
  • Not being able to move a joint as normal
  • Extreme leg or arm weakness
  • A bone or joint that is visibly out of place.

Chronic injuries happen after you play a sport or exercise for a long time. Signs of a chronic injury include:

  • Pain when you play
  • Pain when you exercise
  • A dull ache when you rest
  • Swelling

Importance of Chiropractic Care

Chiropractors can help athletes with sports injuries by relieving their pain and helping them heal faster after an injury. Regular visits will promote quicker recovery after games and training as well as better balance and overall performance. Chiropractors are skilled in the manual adjustment of the spine. They ensure that bones are lined up and balanced, which helps relieve tension in the body. This allows the body to function better and become less susceptible to injury.

The goal of most chiropractic techniques is to restore or enhance joint function while resolving joint inflammation and reducing pain. This hands-on therapy is often used to treat neck or back injuries but also relieves pain throughout the joints and muscles in the body. In addition to treating injuries, chiropractors can also help you prevent injuries from occurring.  It is recommended that you get evaluated by a chiropractor before you start your sport or exercise regimen. They can check your muscles and spine to detect imbalance and alleviate tension so that the body can work naturally rather than be prone to injury.

Our chiropractors at Chiro & Sports Med are committed to providing chiropractic solutions to address your unique needs, whether you are experiencing a pinched nerve, bulging disc, back painneck pain, headaches or even muscular tightness and tension. The Benefits of Chiropractic Care

What is chiropractic care?

Chiropractic care focuses on the relationship between the body’s structure (the spine and pelvis) and its function (the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health. Because the nervous system controls every cell and organ in your body, chiropractors focus their attention on the health of your spine being properly aligned. They perform adjustments to the spine or other parts of the body. A Chiropractors goal is to correct spinal and joint problems, alleviate pain, improve function and help support the body’s natural ability to heal itself without surgery or medication. Chiropractors may use other treatments in addition to spinal manipulation.

The benefits:

One of the best things about chiropractic care is that it’s a drug-free and surgery-free path to healing naturally. Chiropractic adjustments can free your immune system up so it can focus on keeping you healthy, enhancing your ability to think, move and perform. Therefore with regular adjustments chiropractic care offers a host of preventative health benefits including the following:

It can help improve:

  • Nerve Communication in the Body
  • Joint Motion and Coordination
  • Physical Function and Performance
  • Posture and spinal flexibility
  • Scoliosis
  • Organ Function, enhances the Immune Systempro-chiropractic-health-benefits-732x396

Pinched Nerve

What is a Pinched Nerve?

Nerves travel through some narrow spaces in your body and have little soft tissue to protect them. A pinched nerve occurs when a nerve or set of nerves in the body are stretched, constricted, or compressed (pressure) by surrounding tissues. In some cases this tissue might be bone, cartilage, muscle or tendons that presses on the nerve. Symptoms that can arise from this are: a numbing sensation, “pins and needles”, and/or a burning feeling around the affected area. Often the symptoms from a pinched nerve can lessen simply with rest, but when they do not, a chiropractor is then your best bet.

What are some Causes?

A number of conditions may cause tissue to compress a nerve or nerves, including:

  • Injury
  • Poor posture
  • Rheumatoid or wrist arthritis
  • Stress from repetitive work
  • Hobbies or sports activities
  • Obesity

pinched_nerve_lower_backA pinched nerve can occur in different points of your body. A bulging or herniated disk (Disc weakens or tears) in your lower spine may put pressure on a nerve root, causing pain to radiate down the back of your leg and foot (lumbar radiculopathy or sciatic nerve pain). It may also cause pain to radiate from the neck into the shoulder and arm (cervical radiculopathy). A pinched nerve in your wrist can lead to pain and numbness in your hand and fingers (carpal tunnel syndrome). The pressure may be the result of repetitive motions. Or it may happen from holding your body in one position for long periods, such as keeping elbows bent while sleeping. Sometimes symptoms worsen when you try certain movements, such as turning your head or straining your neck.

A pinched nerve can cause multiple problems that can affect your daily life. Here are some symptoms you may not be aware of:

If nerve compression lasts a long time, a protective barrier around the nerve may break down. Fluid may build up, which may cause swelling, extra pressure and scarring. The scarring may interfere with the nerve’s function. Damage from a pinched nerve may be minor or severe. It may cause temporary or long-lasting problems. The earlier you get a diagnosis and treatment for nerve compression, the more quickly you’ll find relief.

Our chiropractors at Chiro & Sports Med are committed to providing chiropractic solutions to address your unique needs, whether you are experiencing a pinched nerve, bulging disc, back painneck pain, headaches or even muscular tightness and tension. You may be searching for pain relief after an accident, experiencing injury or if you suffer from a specific condition like chronic back pain or a spinal condition. Eight Chiropractic Techniques

What are some of our Chiropractic Techniques

Chiropractors have a deep understanding of the body’s structures and how each interacts.  The Chiropractic techniques used at Chiro & Sports Med is a hands-on approach to examining, diagnosing, and treating a patient who is experiencing pain. Using spinal adjustments, manipulation and other physical means to improve neuromusculoskeletal function, and by detecting structural imbalances and nerve interferences throughout these systems the chiropractors ensure they are treating the cause and not just the symptoms.

The chiropractors at Chiro & Sports Med use a wide variety of techniques to ensure you get the most effective and comfortable treatment possible. They will carefully explain all treatment techniques to you prior to their use and we will not do or use anything that you are uncomfortable with. The chiropractic techniques used at Chiro & Sports Med may include: joint mobilisations and adjustments, soft tissue techniques, muscle stretches, acupuncture, heat therapy, interferential therapy, ultrasound therapy, exercise prescription and rehabilitation treatment.

Joint Mobilisation

This chiropractic technique is used to restore or to enhance the joint function joint that has been lost due to injury or disease. Joint mobilisations aid in breaking down adhesions that disrupt joint movement, decrease pain and increase mobility. There are different grades of joint mobilisations used at Chiro & Sports Med based on how much joint play is available. Joint mobilisation can be performed both on the spine and extremity joints. Patients with sensitive nervous systems may benefit from gentle chiropractic techniques to keep the body from overreacting and causing reactive muscle spasm.

The most common adjustment technique used at Chiro & Sports Med is called the Diversified Technique. Diversified Technique involves a short-lever, high-velocity movement with specific contact on the spine or extremity joint to be affected. Adjustments are given in a specific direction in order to correct joint fixations, decrease muscle tension, reduce stress and improve the function and integrity of the nervous system.

Soft tissue

At Chiro & Sports Med the chiropractors apply soft tissue techniques by using their hands to evaluate the texture, tightness and mobility of the soft tissue. The most commonly used soft tissue technique is Active Release Technique (ART). ART is a soft tissue system/movement-based technique used to treat problems with muscles, tendons, ligaments, Headaches, back pain, shoulder pain, sciatica, knee problems, fascia and nerves muscle stretching. Using hand pressure, we work to remove or break up the fibrous adhesions, with the stretching motions generally in the direction of venous and lymphatic flow, although the opposite direction may occasionally be used.

ART is most commonly used to treat conditions related to adhesions or scar tissue in overused muscles resulting from repetitive strain injuries, postural strain, sports injuries and general wear and tear. As adhesions build up, muscles become shorter and weaker, the motion of muscles and joints are altered, and nerves can be compressed. As a result, tissues suffer from decreased blood supply, pain, and poor mobility. The goal of ART is to restore the smooth movement of tissues and to release any trapped nerves or blood vessels. In the first three levels of ART treatment, as with other soft-tissue treatment forms, movement of your tissue is done by your chiropractor. In level four, however, ART requires you to actively move the affected tissue in prescribed ways while your chiropractor applies a specific tension.

Muscle stretching

Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching is the most common muscle stretching technique used at Chiro & Sports Med. This chiropractic technique is extremely effective targeting any tight muscle in the body. PNF is used to enhance both active and passive range of motion with the ultimate goal being to optimise motor performance and rehabilitation. The literature regarding PNF has made the technique the optimal stretching method when the aim is to increase range of motion, especially in short-term changes.

Generally an active PNF stretch involves taking a muscle into a passive stretch and then tensing the muscle while in a stretched position. The contraction is held for a few seconds and then the muscle is taken further into a stretched position. This technique is usually repeated a few times per muscle. PNF can be used to supplement daily stretching and is employed to make quick gains in range of motion to help athletes improve performance. Aside from being safe and time efficient, the dramatic gains in range of motion seen in a short period of time may also promote compliance with the exercise and rehabilitation program.

Accupunture

Acupuncture is a form of treatment used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is an effective, holistic and natural form of healing that has a wide range of health benefits and can improve a wide range of conditions. It is based on the principle that there are energetic pathways, or channels throughout the body that influence associated internal organs and structures. Energy from these pathways surfaces at various points on the body, identified as acupuncture points and each of these points serves as an access route to the deeper circulatory channels within.

This chiropractic technique is used to treat a wide variety of conditions, from carpal tunnel syndrome to fibromyalgia and tennis elbow. It has also been shown to strengthen the immune system, improve respiratory health, relieve insomnia, and reduce stress while bringing emotional balance to patients. Additionally, patients who are recuperating from illness, injury, or surgery can often recover faster when acupuncture is undertaken to increase circulation and reduce inflammation.

For patients who want to experience the best of what both chiropractic and the acupuncture offer, an evolving field of medicine known as chiropractic acupuncture combines the two. At Chiro & Sports Med the technique is used by inserting extremely fine gauge needles at selected points, stimulating them and thereby activating the body’s natural healing abilities. These points are also places to stimulate nerves, muscles and connective tissue. This stimulation appears to boost the activity of your body’s natural painkillers and increase blood flow.

Heat therapy

Heat therapy is the application of heat to the body for pain relief and muscle stiffness and can be used to reduce long lasting or chronic pain. At Chiro & Sports Med your chiropractors use wheat packs and it can be beneficial to those with arthritis, stiff muscles and injuries to the deep tissue of the skin. It is also most commonly used for rehabilitation purposes and may be used in conjunction with other chiropractic treatments.

The therapeutic effects of heat include increasing the extensibility of collagen tissues; decreasing joint stiffness; reducing pain; relieving muscle spasms; reducing inflammation, edema, and aids in the post acute phase of healing; and increasing blood flow. Heat therapy causes blood vessels in the treated areas to dilate or open wider.  As a result, blood flow to the area is increased.  Sore stiff muscles may relax and become more flexible.  The increased blood flow to the affected area provides proteins, nutrients, and oxygen for better healing and makes the delivery of an adjustment more comfortable and effective.

Interferential therapy

Interferential therapy (IFT) is one of various types of physical therapy used at Chiro & Sports Med. IFT is used in four clinical applications, to relieve pain, stimulate muscles, increase local blood flow and reduce edema. It uses a mid-frequency electrical signal to treat muscular spasms and strains. The current produces a massaging effect over the affected area at periodic intervals, and this stimulates the secretion of endorphins, the body’s natural pain relievers, thus relaxing strained muscles and promoting soft-tissue healing.

It has been suggested that IFT works in a ‘special way’ because it is ‘interferential’ as opposed to ‘normal’ stimulation. The machine can be set up to act more like a TENS-type device or a muscle stimulator by adjusting the stimulating (beat) frequency. Some patients regard it as more acceptable, as it generates less discomfort than some other forms of electrical stimulation.

Ultrasound therapy

Ultrasound is used to minimize muscle pain and movement dysfunction. This chiropractic technique stimulates the tissue beneath the skin’s surface using very high frequency sound waves. At Chiro & Sports Med, ultrasound is applied using a transducer or applicator that is in direct contact with the patient’s skin. Gel is used on all surfaces of the head to reduce friction and assist transmission of the ultrasonic waves. This treatment can help reduce stiffness, swelling, and pain, increase circulation and promote pain free movement. It can be used in conjunction with stretching, heat, therapeutic massage, or gentle chiropractic manipulation. Ultrasound therapy is a painless procedure and many people find it relaxing.

Exercise Prescription

Exercise prescription is the referral of patients to exercise programs. At Chiro & Sports Med your chiropractors will develop exercise programs designed to modulate acute exercise programming variables to create the adaptations desired by the individual or sport.

Prescription of stretching exercises is most commonly developed and results in a feeling of increased muscle control, flexibility and range of motion. Taking home stretches can also help strengthen muscles, and in turn strong muscles are important to stabilising your spine, pelvis or any other injury you have come in with

At Chiro & Sports Med, our professionals are masters’ qualified chiropractors, with further accreditation in managing and treating sports injuries. They are also academics and give lectures and run tutorials in chiropractic skills at Macquarie University ensuring they stay at the top of the academic field. Moreover, they are constantly adding to their technical skills and knowledge base to keep current with the latest advancements in manual therapy.

Neck & Shoulder Pain

Neck & Shoulder Pain

Neck & Shoulder pain can be classified in many different ways. Some people experience only neck pain or only shoulder pain, while others experience pain in both areas. Your neck and shoulders contain muscles, bones, nerves, arteries, and veins, as well as many ligaments and other supporting structures. Many conditions can cause Neck & Shoulder pain.

Neck pain

Most neck pain is due to strain and spasm of the neck muscles. Your neck is flexible and supports the weight of your head,  so it can be vulnerable to injuries and conditions that can cause pain, stiffness and restrict motion. In many cases, it’s due to poor posture, poor sleeping habits, overuse or by injury, from a fall, contact sports, or whiplash. Arthritis or injury to the neck can result in a pinched nerve. When this is the cause of the neck pain, the pain may extend down the shoulder and arm. To delve into the most common complaints related to the neck, check the menu bellow.

Most of the time, neck pain isn’t a serious condition and can be relieved within a few days with the help of specialised care, such as of a chiropractor. In some cases, neck pain can indicate serious injury or illness. If you have neck pain that continues for more than a week, is severe, or is accompanied by other symptoms, (fever & headaches, nausea or vomiting) seek specialised medical attention immediately.

Neck pain symptoms

Anyone with a neck sprain may go through an array of possible symptoms.

  • Pain, especially in the back of the neck, that worsens with movement
  • Pain that peaks a day or so after the injury, rather than immediately
  • Muscle spasms and pain in the upper shoulder
  • Headache in the back of the head
  • Increased irritability, fatigue, trouble sleeping, and difficulty concentrating
  • Numbness in the arm or hand
  • Neck stiffness or decreased mobility (sideways, vertical, circular)
  • Tingling or weakness in the arms

Shoulder pain

Shoulder pain is common and over time, the pain may become persistent and cause discomfort and disability. Most of the time the pain comes from the soft tissues near the joint and not from the bones or the joint itself. These soft tissues include the ligaments, tendons and the bursae. Younger people are more likely to experience shoulder pain due to an accident or injury. However, as we get older, natural wear and tear occurs in the shoulder joint and the rotator cuff tendon. All arm movements are dependent on a good, normal rhythmic movement between the shoulder blades, spine, clavicle and shoulder. If shoulder mechanics do not work, this can result in neck, arms, back and shoulder pain .

The position and support muscle of the shoulder blades play a particularly important role in all arm movements. Unilateral posture allows the arms be held slightly out from the side of the body, with round, forward curved shoulders. In this position, lose scapula its muscular support, the small, stabilising shoulder muscles are overloaded and it can get cramped for the tendons that go under the clavicle until the ball joint in the shoulder. Over time this can lead to inflammation and degenerative changes in tendons and joints. Shoulder pain  can also come from wear and calcification, narrow channels of nerve, muscles and blood vessels, as well as shoulder capsule may harden, also called frozen shoulder.

Bursitis is the inflammation of the bursa near the top of the shoulder. It can start with an uneasy feeling in the shoulder and may progress to considerable pain within 6-12 hours. There maybe swelling at the tip of the shoulder. It is often seen in individuals who have been cutting hedges, painting the house, playing sports and so on.

Rotator cuff pain frequently occurs in both young athletes and middle-aged people. Young athletes using their arms overhead for swimming, baseball, and tennis are particularly vulnerable. Individuals who do repetitive lifting or overhead activities while using the arm, including paper hanging, construction, or painting are susceptible to injury as well. All these issues must be thoroughly examined by a chiropractor for the proper treatment can be implemented.

Treatment for neck & shoulder pain

Early consultation can reduce late effects that often occur with neck & shoulder injuries. When you are not quickly improved, or you wonder if something is wrong with your neck or shoulder, a chiropractor can refer to the necessary X-ray, CT or MRI, or even refer to specialists if this proves necessary. However, research has shown that patients with neck or Shoulder pain have benefited from treatment by a chiropractor and there is good evidence that chiropractic techniques are more effective than other conservative therapies.

The conservative treatment applied at Chiro & Sports Med aims to restore normal function of the locomotor and nervous system to decrease pain, promote overall health and increase quality of life. Treatment will be specifically tailored to each individual. At Chiro & Sports Med our chiropractors mainly uses the hands in the processing and apply a variety of methods and techniques to restore normal function in the joints, muscles, connective tissue and nervous system, these include:

In fact, surveys have shown that between 40 and 60 percent of the general population has trouble sleeping. Many factors such as daily stress and worries, pressures from job and family, wrong posture, body aches and pains caused by uncomfortable beds or pillows, and many other issues can cause poor quality sleep.

Motor Vehicle Accident – Effective Chiropractic

Have you or somebody else been involved in a motor vehicle accident (MVA) recently and you suffer from whiplash, neck pain or back pain? Many people do not realise how severe a car accident can be. A thorough chiropractic check up, immediately after an accident, will help minimise any injury and prevent from long lasting pain.

Whiplash

Whiplash is one of the most common injuries from a car crash and should be not underestimated. It occurs when a sudden, jarring movement of the head is sustained backward, forward or even to the side. Whiplash destabilises the spine and causes a variety of symptoms.

Common symptoms associated with motor vehicle accidents

What does the research say?

According to the Canadian research paper (Dies & Strapp 1992) motor vehicle accidents (MVA) are a major cause of spinal injuries treated by chiropractors. The overall average number of treatments given was 14 and patients who complained of headache or low back pain required more treatments. It has been proven that patients who received chiropractic care experienced a higher level of improvement than those who delayed seeking treatment. In fact, the physical effects of an accident may not occur or be felt immediately. Therefore, we highly recommend you to immediately seek treatment in order to avoid long-term pain and maintain the health of a spine that has been through a trauma.

herniated-disc

Herniated Disc

When you hear the term “slipped”, “ruptured” or “bulging” disc, what this actually means is a herniated disc – a common cause of pain in the necklower back, arms, or legs.

Discs anatomy

Discs are soft, rubbery pads found between the hard bones (vertebrae) that comprise the spinal column. The discs between the vertebrae enable the back to flex or bend and also act as shock absorbers.

Herniated disc causes

A disc herniates or ruptures when part of the centre nucleus pushes through the periphery of the disc and back toward the spinal canal. This places pressure on the nerves, or in the disc itself, resulting in 2 possible types of pain:

Pinched nerve – When the disc itself is not painful, but rather the material that is leaking out of the inside of the disc is pinching or irritating a nearby nerve. This type of pathology produces pain called radicular pain leading to pain that may radiate to other parts of the body, such as from the low back down the leg or from the neck down the arm. Leg pain from a pinched nerve is usually described as sciatica.

Disc pain – When the disc space itself is painful and the source of pain. This type of pain is typically called axial pain.

Either of the above two conditions can occur in the cervical (neck),thoracic (upper) or lumbar (lower) spine. However, they tend to be most common in the lower back because it bears the most torque and force on a day to day basis.

Herniated disc risk factors

In children and young adults, discs have high-water content. As we get older, the water content in the discs reduces and the discs become less flexible. The discs start to shrink and the spaces between the vertebrae get narrower. Conditions that can fasten the degeneration:

  • Improper lifting
  • Smoking
  • Excessive body weight that places added stress on the discs, particularly in the lower back
  • Sudden pressure (which may be slight)
  • Repetitive strenuous activities

Lower back herniated disc symptoms

  • Sharp, shooting pain that extends from the buttocks down the back of one leg is the most common symptom.
  • Weakness in one leg
  • Tingling (“pins-and-needles” sensation) or numbness in one leg or buttock
  • A burning pain centered in the back

Herniated disc treatment

Chiropractic treatment is effective in treating the symptoms of herniated discs in more than 90% of patients. The primary goal of treatment is to help relieve pain and other symptoms resulting from the herniated disc. To achieve this goal, each Chiro & Sports Med patient’s treatment plan is individualized, based on the source of the pain, the severity of pain and the specific symptoms that the patient exhibits.

There are also a few things that you can do yourself:

  • Cold compresses or ice can be applied a couple of times a day for 20 minutes at a time.
  • After any spasms settle, gentle heat applications can be employed.
  • Any physical exercise needs to be slow and controlled, particularly bending forward and lifting. This will help to ensure that symptoms do not return-as can taking short walks and avoiding sitting for long periods. To avoid future episodes of pain, it is important that you be instructed in how to properly stand, sit, and lift.
  • Muscle relaxers and anti-inflammatory medications can be helpful.
  • If these nonsurgical treatment measures fail, cortisone injections may lessen nerve irritation and enable more effective participation in chiropractic treatment. Ask your practitioner about it.
