Summer is almost here! National Skin Cancer Week falls from 20th – 26th November.  We are encouraging all Australians to use the five forms of sun protection, slip, slop, slap, seek, and slide.

Each year more than 2000 people in Australia die from skin cancer and the Cancer Council estimates that Australia spends more than $1 billion per year treating skin cancer. We have one of the highest rates in the world and it is estimated that almost twice as many men as women will die from melanoma this year alone. In fact, 2 out of 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70, so this week is a reminder to use sun protection and to know the importance of early detection for all Australians.

Most skin cancers can be prevented by the use of good sun protection. During National Skin Cancer Action Week, it’s important that all Australians use the five forms of sun protection. These are:

  • Slip on sun-protective clothing
  • Slop of SPF30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen
  • Slap on a broad-brimmed hat
  • Seek shade
  • Slide on sunglasses

A combination of these measures, along with getting to know your skin and regularly checking for any changes is key.

Moles and freckles

Most people have moles and freckles however if you have lots of freckles or moles, you are at a higher risk of skin cancer. So it is vital to have your doctor check out any unusual changes to your skin as soon as possible, including new spots and any moles or freckles that:

  • Grow
  • Change shape
  • Change colour
  • Bleed, or
  • Ulcerate

#OwnYourTone

During National Skin Cancer Action Week, teenagers are encouraged to #OwnYourTone. Consequently, using all five forms of sun protection to prevent sunburn can protect their skin from UV radiation.
