What are some of our Chiropractic Techniques

Chiropractors have a deep understanding of the body’s structures and how each interacts. The Chiropractic techniques used at Chiro & Sports Med is a hands-on approach to examining, diagnosing, and treating a patient who is experiencing pain. Chiropractors ensure they are treating the cause and not just the symptoms. By using spinal adjustments, manipulation, and other physical means to improve neuromusculoskeletal function and detecting structural imbalances and nerve interferences.

The chiropractors at Chiro & Sports Med use a wide variety of techniques and they will always carefully explain to you about the treatment techniques prior to their use. Also, they will not do or use anything that you are uncomfortable with. Some of the techniques used may include joint mobilisations and adjustments, soft tissue techniques, and muscle stretches. Also, acupuncture, heat therapy, interferential therapy, ultrasound therapy, exercise prescription, and rehabilitation treatment.

Joint Mobilisation

A technique used to restore or enhance the functioning joint is Joint Mobilisation. It aids in breaking down adhesions that disrupt joint movement, decrease pain, and increase mobility. There are different grades of joint mobilisations used at Chiro & Sports Med based on how much joint play is available.

The most common technique used at Chiro & Sports Med is the Diversified Technique. It comprises of a very precise high velocity, low-amplitude manual thrust. Produced by hand with specific contact on the affected spine or extremity joint. This decreases muscle tension, reduces stress, and improves the function and integrity of the nervous system.

Soft tissue

At Chiro & Sports Med, the chiropractors apply soft tissue techniques. They use their hands to check the texture, tightness, and mobility of the soft tissue. The most common soft tissue technique used is Active Release Technique (ART).

ART – a soft tissue system technique used to treat muscle, tendon, and ligament problems. Also, headaches, back pain, shoulder painand sciatica. As well as knee problems, fascia, and nerve-muscle stretching. Using hand pressure, we work to remove or break up the fibrous adhesions. Followed with stretching motions generally in the direction of venous and lymphatic flow. Though, the opposite direction may occasionally be used.

ART treats conditions related to adhesions or scar tissue in overused muscles. Usually a result of repetitive strain injuries, postural strain, sports injuries, and general wear and tear. As adhesions build up, muscles become shorter and weaker. Therefore the motion of muscles and joints becomes altered, and nerves can be compressed. As a result, tissues suffer from decreased blood supply, pain, and poor mobility. The goal of ART is to restore the smooth movement of tissues, to release any trapped nerves or blood vessels.

In the first three levels of ART treatment, as with other soft-tissue treatment forms, movement of your tissue is done by your chiropractor.  In level four, ART requires you to actively move the affected tissue in a certain way while your chiropractor applies a specific tension.

Muscle stretching

Proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching technique is very effective in targeting any tight muscle in the body. As a result, PNF enhances both the active and passive range of motion. The ultimate goal being to optimize motor performance and rehabilitation. The literature on PNF has made this technique the optimal stretching method when the aim is to increase range of motion, especially in short-term changes.

An active PNF stretch involves taking a muscle into a passive stretch and then tensing the muscle while in a stretched position. PNF can be used to supplement daily stretching and to make quick gains in range of motion to help athletes improve performance. Aside from being safe and time-efficient, the dramatic gains in range of motion seen in a short period of time may also promote compliance with the exercise and rehabilitation program.

Acupuncture

Acupuncture, a form of treatment used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is a holistic, and natural form of healing. It has a wide range of health benefits and can improve a wide range of conditions. It is based on the principle that there are energetic pathways or channels throughout the body that influence associated internal organs and structures. Energy from these pathways surfaces at various points on the body, identified as acupuncture points. Each of these points serves as an access route to the deeper circulatory channels within.

Acupuncture helps increase circulation and reduce inflammation. At Chiro & Sports Med the technique is used by inserting extremely fine gauge needles at selected points, stimulating them and thereby activating the body’s natural healing abilities. These points are places to stimulate nerves, muscles, and connective tissue. This stimulation appears to boost the activity of your body’s natural painkillers and increase blood flow.

Heat therapy

Heat therapy is the application of heat to the body for pain relief and muscle stiffness.  So it can help reduce long-lasting or chronic pain. At Chiro & Sports Med, your chiropractors use wheat packs. This can be beneficial to those with arthritis, stiff muscles, and injuries to the deep tissue of the skin. It is also most commonly used for rehabilitation purposes and may be used in conjunction with other chiropractic treatments.

The therapeutic effects of heat include increasing the extensibility of collagen tissues, decreasing joint stiffness, and reducing pain. It also relieves muscle spasms, reduces inflammation, edema, and aids in the post-acute phase of healing. Heat also increases blood flow. Heat therapy causes blood vessels in the treated areas to increase, dilate, and/or open wider. This allows sore stiff muscles to relax and become more flexible. It provides proteins, nutrients, and oxygen for better healing. As a result, the delivery of an adjustment becomes more comfortable and effective.

Interferential therapy

Interferential therapy (IFT) is also one of the various types of physical therapy used at Chiro & Sports Med. It helps to relieve pain, stimulate muscles, increase local blood flow, and reduce edema. It uses a mid-frequency electrical signal to treat muscular spasms and strains. The current produces a massaging effect over the affected area at periodic intervals. This stimulates the secretion of endorphins (the body’s natural pain relievers) therefore relaxing the strained muscles and promoting soft-tissue healing.

IFT works in a special way because it is ‘interferential’ as opposed to ‘normal’ stimulation. Because this machine generates less discomfort than some other forms of electrical stimulation some patients regard it as more acceptable.

Ultrasound therapy

This type of therapy helps to minimize muscle pain and movement dysfunction. This chiropractic technique stimulates the tissue beneath the skin’s surface using very high-frequency sound waves. At Chiro & Sports Med, ultrasound is applied using a transducer or applicator that is in direct contact with the patient’s skin.  This treatment can also help reduce stiffness, swelling, and pain, increase circulation, and promote pain-free movement. Likewise, it can be used in conjunction with stretching, heat, therapeutic massage, or gentle chiropractic manipulation. Ultrasound therapy is a painless procedure hence many people find it relaxing.

Exercise Prescription

Exercise prescription is the referral of patients to exercise programs. At Chiro & Sports Med your chiropractors will develop exercise programs that are designed and adapted to meet the individual need or sport. As a result, stretching exercises can help increase muscle control, flexibility, and range of motion. Taking home a stretches program can also help strengthen muscles, and in turn, strong muscles are important to stabilising your spine, pelvis or any other injury you have come in with.
