National Skin Cancer Action Week, 17-23 November, 2019
Two out of three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by the age of 70 so this week is an important reminder to use sun protection and to know the importance of early detection for all Australians.
Each year more than 2000 people in Australia die from skin cancer and the Cancer Council estimates that Australia spends more than $1 billion per year treating skin cancer.
Most skin cancers can be prevented by the use of good sun protection. During National Skin Cancer Action Week, all Australians are urged to use the five forms of sun protection. These are to:
- Slip on sun-protective clothing
- Slop of SPF30 (or higher) broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen
- Slap on a broad-brimmed hat
- Seek shade
- Slide on sunglasses
A combination of these measures, along with getting to know your skin and regularly checking for any changes is key.
Moles and freckles
Most people have moles and freckles. But if you have lots of freckles or moles, you are at a higher risk of skin cancer.
Have your doctor check out any unusual changes to your skin as soon as possible, including new spots and any moles or freckles that:
- Change shape
- Change colour
- Bleed, or
This National Skin Cancer Action Week teenagers are encouraged to #OwnYourTone by using all five forms of sun protection to prevent sunburn and protect their skin from UV radiation.
