Understanding chiropractic

What chiropractic involves

Chiropractic is a government-registered, evidence-based health profession focused on diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal problems, particularly those affecting the spine, joints, muscles and nerves.

The core of chiropractic treatment is the spinal adjustment, also called spinal manipulation. This is a controlled, specific force applied to a joint that has restricted movement or is not working correctly. It is not about cracking bones. The sound you sometimes hear is a release of gas in the joint as the surfaces briefly separate, a normal physiological response.

Beyond spinal adjustments, our chiropractors use soft-tissue therapy, dry needling, rehabilitation exercise and mobilisation, depending on what your assessment reveals. It is not a one-size protocol, but a diagnosis-driven process where the treatment is decided by the findings.

Your first visit

What to expect at your first appointment

First visits are thorough by design. Understanding what is causing your problem is the only way to treat it properly. Here is how it works.

1

Health history and intake

Before anything hands-on, we take a complete history. Your current complaint, how long you have had it, what makes it better or worse, your medications, past injuries and relevant general health. The more we understand, the better the assessment that follows.

2

Clinical examination

A structured physical examination using orthopaedic and neurological testing, postural analysis, joint range of motion, palpation to find areas of restriction, and where relevant, muscle and neurodynamic assessment. If nerve symptoms are present, we assess the nerve pathway in detail before any treatment begins.

3

Imaging if clinically indicated

If x-rays are clinically justified, our on-site digital x-ray means they happen at the same appointment, with no referral and no waiting for results. We explain exactly what we found and why it matters before deciding on treatment.

4

Diagnosis and treatment plan

We give you a clear explanation of what we found, what we believe is causing your symptoms, and what the plan involves, including an honest estimate of how many visits you are likely to need and what rehabilitation will look like. No open-ended schedules, no vague timelines.

5

Treatment begins at the first visit

In most cases, treatment starts at the first appointment. Depending on your diagnosis, that may include spinal adjustment, joint mobilisation, soft-tissue work, dry needling, remedial massage, or a combination. You leave with a clear plan, not just a set of exercises on a printed sheet.

The assessment

What our clinical examination covers

Every assessment at Chiro & Sports Med is structured and systematic. Depending on your presentation, your examination may include some or all of the following.

Structural and postural analysis
Joint range of motion testing
Orthopaedic special tests
Neurological examination
Muscle strength testing
Palpation of joints and soft tissues
Functional movement assessment
Neurodynamic testing (nerve mobility)
Movement pattern assessment
Coordination and balance where relevant
Digital x-ray if clinically indicated
Gait analysis for lower limb problems

Treatment techniques

The techniques our chiropractors use

Treatment is matched to your diagnosis, your presentation and your preferences. Our practitioners are trained in a range of techniques and will discuss the best approach for you before beginning.

Spinal adjustment (manipulation)

A controlled, specific force applied to a restricted joint. The primary tool in chiropractic and the most researched. The audible click is simply gas releasing from the joint.

Joint mobilisation

Gentle, rhythmic movement of a joint through its range of motion. Used where a full adjustment is not indicated, or as a complementary technique.

Soft-tissue therapy

Targeted work on muscles, tendons and connective tissue to reduce tension, improve circulation and restore normal tissue function.

Dry needling

Fine needles placed into myofascial trigger points to reduce pain and muscle inhibition. Useful for persistent muscle tension and overuse injuries. Learn more →

Rehabilitation exercise

Progressive strength, stability and movement programmes that address the underlying cause of your problem, not just the symptoms. Learn more →

Postural and ergonomic advice

Workstation setup, posture correction and load management for desk workers, tradespeople and athletes to reduce recurrence.

Common questions

Chiropractic FAQs

Is chiropractic evidence-based?
Yes. There is strong clinical evidence supporting chiropractic care for a range of musculoskeletal conditions, particularly low back pain, neck pain and certain types of headaches, and the research base continues to grow. Our practitioners follow current clinical guidelines and apply evidence-based approaches to assessment and treatment.
Does chiropractic hurt?
Most patients find treatment comfortable, and many feel relief soon after an adjustment. Some mild soreness in the treated area can occur in the 24 hours afterwards, similar to the feeling after exercise. Your chiropractor always explains what they are about to do before proceeding and works within your comfort level.
How many visits will I need?
It depends on your diagnosis, how long the problem has been there and how your body responds. After your initial assessment we give you an honest estimate and a clear plan, and we review it as you progress. We will not keep you on an open-ended treatment schedule.
Do I need a referral from my GP?
No. Chiropractors are primary-contact practitioners, so you can book directly without a GP referral. You may be eligible for a Medicare-rebated Enhanced Primary Care plan for up to five visits a year if your GP refers you under that scheme, but it is not a requirement to see us.
Can I claim on my health fund?
Yes. We accept all major health funds including Medibank, Bupa, HCF, nib and ahm, with on-the-spot HICAPS claiming available. See our fees page for full details.
Is chiropractic safe during pregnancy?
Yes, with appropriate technique adaptations. Chiropractic care during pregnancy can help manage low back pain, pelvic girdle pain and other musculoskeletal complaints that become more common as the body changes. Our practitioners are experienced in treating pregnant women and use modified approaches that are comfortable at each stage. See our pregnancy care page for more detail.
What is the clicking sound during an adjustment?
It is called a cavitation. When a joint is adjusted, the surfaces briefly separate and dissolved gases in the joint fluid are released, which produces the sound. It is entirely normal, carries no clinical significance on its own, and is not the sound of bones cracking. Some adjustments produce no sound at all and are equally effective.
